Australian billionaire James Packer has been seen back in Australia for what’s believed to be the first time in over a year.
The businessman, 51, touched down in Melbourne on Sunday morning via a private jet, before heading straight to Crown Casino – almost one year since resigning from the board.
He’s believed to be in the country to attend the funeral of his long-time friend and personal chef Justin Bull, who was found dead in his Sydney cafe on Friday.
Mr Packer was seen walking into the riverside Melbourne casino dressed in all black and with his head down.
It’s believed Mr Packer splits his time between Los Angeles and Aspen, Colorado, and has plans to continue to live in the United States to be close to his ex-wife Erica and children.
Over the past few years, the billionaire businessman has suffered three nervous breakdowns, two broken marriages and a conflicted relationship with his enormous inherited wealth.
Mr Packer delved into the private story behind his mental health journey in his biography, The Price of Fortune: The Untold Story of Being James Packer written by journalist Damon Kitney.
In 2016, the billionaire felt his life was spiralling out of control, as his daily diet consisted of vodka and powerful prescription pills.
As his businesses seemingly collapsed, Mr Packer was pushed into a third nervous breakdown.
By October that year, he began to worry the people around him, with one psychiatrist even asking him: ‘Are you trying to kill yourself?’
He has since been on the road to recovery.
Last March, he resigned from the board of the Crown casino company due to mental health issues.
He then checked himself in for five weeks at an exclusive psychiatric hospital in America, costing AUD$5,000 per night.
Mr Packer has since opened about his two-year relationship with Canadian-born model turned socialite Kylie Lim, who he praises for helping him through dark times.
